A Course in Miracles Teacher Assistant

The Course in Miracles is a spiritual teaching rather than a religion. It teaches that "a universal theology is impossible, but a universal experience is not only possible but necessary."

ACIM's Text, Workbook for Students and Manual for Teachers form a complex thought system that is both intellectually sophisticated and highly practical. It is designed to train the mind in a step-by-step way.

Course Summary

The Course in Miracles is a spiritual-psychology designed to bring about divine experiences. It consists of three books — a 669-page Text, a 488-page Workbook for Students and a 92-page Teacher's Manual. The order in which you study the books and the way you apply them depends on your individual needs, preferences and aims.

The course in miracles was developed over a period of eight years by Helen Schucman (1910-1981), who, while a practicing secular atheist, had visionary experiences and heard an inner voice. She then began to take notes in shorthand based on what she received. Her internal dictation eventually evolved into the six-volume textbook, known as "ACIM" and a four-volume workbook and teacher's manual called "ACM."

While in New York City to meet with Dr. William Thetford (known as Bill), whom she shared a private office with, Helen had lunch with her friend, Judy, a woman who was also a professional counselor and therapist. During their meal, Helen asked her a question about a situation she was having with a client and suddenly a voice came to her saying, "There must be another way."

She then took down her internal dictation in notebooks and began to dictate this to Bill. Over the next few years, these scribings became the basis of a 622-page textbook, a 478-page workbook and 88-page teacher's manual.

Helen and Bill worked together to edit and publish the Course in 1976. This publication was a major turning point in their lives, but it was not entirely satisfactory. They felt the editing had compromised both the integrity of their work and the Course's teaching power.

In 1999 certain parties associated with a copyright litigation over the Course in Miracles visited the Association for Research and Enlightenment (A.R.E.) for the express purpose of obtaining an illegal copy of the HLC (Huge Lynn Cayce Version). They copied the book and put it into circulation.

The Foundation for Inner Peace, which publishes the Course in Miracles, has not published Helen Schucman's original notes and urtext because Helen and Bill did not wish to be involved with the public teaching of ACM. FIP also did not want to make money from selling the original manuscripts.

Lessons

A Course in Miracles consists of three volumes, a Text, a Workbook and a Manual for Teachers. Each volume is meant to be read, studied and practiced in its own right.

While the Text is a scholarly tome, the Workbook provides a practical approach to incorporating lessons into one’s daily life. The manual on the other hand is a bit more challenging, and is an invaluable tool for those who want to teach the Course.

The manual for teachers is an excellent primer on delivering a Course in Miracles lesson that is both interesting and enlightening to students of all ages and backgrounds. In addition, the manual has a number of practical tips and techniques that will help you to make the most of your lessons and encourage students to take the message of A Course in Miracles home with them.

For example, if you have a class of kids who are interested in science, the best way to get them excited about Science is by integrating it into other subjects. For instance, you could use the weather to demonstrate the concept of evaporation by measuring the amount of water that evaporates on a hot day and comparing it to how much evaporates on a cool one.

As a former teacher and current director of an elementary school, I have personally witnessed the power of hands-on Science to get kids excited about the world around them. I have also seen how important it is to engage children in a meaningful way early on, building a host of STEM and 21st Century skills that will set them up for success later on.

Instructors

The Course in Miracles is a reformed and ecumenical version of Christian Science, and is endorsed by many mainline churches. This influence has led to a broader public understanding of this spiritual practice, as well as a variety of teachings on its principles.

One of the most interesting aspects of this work is the role of the teacher. The Course teaches that the teacher is a spiritual shepherd and mentor who guides his pupils in their quest for learning the Course. In this capacity, the teacher is a counselor and healer. He helps his pupil deal with egoic thoughts, helps him understand the Course's concepts and what they require of him, and he offers guidance on how to walk the Course's path.

Another aspect of the teacher's role in the Course is that he acts as a medium, or channel. This is a type of spiritual deliverance or healing that involves the student receiving messages and guidance from wholly spirit, rather than just through verbal communication. This is achieved through the teacher's "tune-in" to a higher source of guidance.

Helen Schucman, an atheistic psychologist, was the spiritual medium and eight-year channel of the Course in Miracles. She was not a Christian, but her early training in New Thought metaphysics and the occult had prepared her for this work. She and her husband, Gloria Wapnick, have been involved in teaching the Course since 1977.

She and her husband were originally drawn to the Course by a desire for spiritual growth and development. They felt the Course would give them a greater sense of peace and balance in their lives, as well as a deeper connection with their own divine guidance.

They also believed that it could help people in their daily lives, by removing the blocks that prevent them from achieving personal and universal peace. After a number of sessions, the couple began to see the Course's impact on their own lives and on those around them.

They decided to open a teaching center and institute for the purpose of facilitating their own and others' work with A Course in Miracles. They have established a variety of courses and workshops, some of which are offered in the United States and abroad.

The course teaches you how to do this by bringing your attention to the power of forgiveness and remission. This is the key to healing your mind, which is at the heart of all of our problems.
